Congres passed the Safety Drinking Water Act in 1974. The law is there to make sure that the water is good for us to drink. You can also bring someone into make sure that the water has no contaminats in it such as germs or chemicles. The web site says that if you are concerned about your water being contaminated in your home'a water system then you can contact your state drinking water certification officer. This person can give you  a list of certified laboratories in your state. Depending on how many contaminants you want to test , the test can cost from $15 to hundreds of dollars. There is also a hotline that you can contact that can give you information on some testing methods it is called the Safe Drinking Water Hotline.
